Coverage Gaps

Honest list of what HantaScan does and does not cover today. Coverage gaps are not failures — they are the work, written down so readers can decide what to trust and contributors can decide what to send.

Current scope

The current build covers a specific, named slice of hantavirus information.

  • The active 2026 MV Hondius cruise-linked cluster, tracked through WHO Disease Outbreak News updates.
  • U.S. cumulative HPS baseline from CDC's Reported Cases page (most recent: 864 through 2023).
  • Sixteen priority state records driving the map layer.
  • Recognized U.S. outbreak case studies, including the 2012 Yosemite Curry Village cluster.
  • Surveillance posture context: NNDSS pipeline, HAN advisories, CDC annual reporting cadence.
  • Editorial pages for clinical, ecological, and analytical context.

Known gaps

The gaps below are the ones we already know about. The list is not exhaustive.

  • Per-state health-department feeds are not integrated.
  • NNDSS weekly tables are described but not auto-ingested.
  • Historical state-by-state counts are summarized, not enumerated row-by-row.
  • Non-U.S. reservoir ecology is described qualitatively, not mapped.
  • Spanish-language content is not yet available.

Why these gaps exist

Some gaps are scope (we deliberately did not include them in this build). Some are data engineering (the source exists but has not been wired). Some are editorial (the content does not meet our quality bar yet). We try to keep the distinction visible.

Roadmap

The shortest path to a more complete picture goes through three connected pieces of work.

  • Wire NNDSS weekly tables into the case index with date-stamped per-state rows.
  • Add state health-department feeds where they are public and structured.
  • Extend the map dataset from 16 priority states to all 50.

How to help close gaps

The most useful contributions point at primary-source feeds we have not connected yet, or at specific states whose health departments publish structured updates. Send those through the tip form.
