Crowdsourcing

Submit Exposure Signal

Public-source tips, structured field notes, and exposure narratives that might be useful for source review. HantaScan is not a clinical channel — submissions are a way to flag information for editorial review, not to receive medical advice.

What we accept

The most useful submissions are anchored to public, citable material.

  • Links to official health-department updates or advisories.
  • Public news coverage of a hantavirus event with primary-source attribution.
  • Personal cabin / shed / structure exposure narratives with location and date.
  • Pointers to NNDSS table entries that need a HantaScan record.

What we don't accept

Some submissions are out of scope for this surface.

  • Private medical information about another person without their permission.
  • Speculation without a citable source.
  • Requests for medical diagnosis or treatment guidance.
  • Reports of emergencies — call 911 or your local public health authority instead.

Useful fields for an exposure narrative

When you describe a personal exposure, the fields below are the ones that actually shape how the report can be reviewed.

  • Date or date range of the suspected exposure.
  • Location, ideally at the city / county level.
  • Setting — cabin, shed, barn, vehicle, attic, crawlspace, storage.
  • Activity — sweeping, vacuuming, opening up a closed-up space, sleeping in.
  • Rodent evidence observed — droppings, urine, nesting material, sightings.
  • Cleanup method — wet methods, dry sweeping, PPE used.
  • Symptoms, including dates of onset for each.

Privacy posture

Do not include personally identifying information about other people. Do not submit clinical records covered by HIPAA on someone else's behalf. Submissions are reviewed editorially and are not published as-is.

Review workflow

Submissions land in a review queue handled best-effort by a small editorial team. Useful tips become source links, classification updates, or new records; tips that do not meet the bar are filed and not published. There is no SLA — only a working queue.
