Severity

Fatality Context

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is severe. Historical CDC data describes case-fatality at roughly one in three confirmed cases. HantaScan keeps this severity signal visible without turning every record into a personal risk score.

HPS severity at a glance

Confirmed HPS cases progress to a cardiopulmonary phase that can require intensive care. Treatment is supportive — there is no approved antiviral for hantavirus disease. Outcomes depend heavily on how quickly the cardiopulmonary phase is recognized and supported.

Why we flag escalation separately

Early HPS symptoms look like many viral illnesses; the cardiopulmonary phase is the moment that decides outcome. We flag it on every clinical page on purpose.

  • Shortness of breath after rodent exposure is an emergency signal, not a mild symptom.
  • Onset of respiratory difficulty can be hours, not days, after late-phase symptoms begin.
  • Early ICU involvement materially affects outcome.

Time-course of severe disease

After roughly four to ten days of early symptoms, HPS can transition to the cardiopulmonary phase. Fluid accumulates in the lungs, blood pressure can drop, and patients can need ventilatory and circulatory support quickly.

ICU considerations

Supportive care typically involves oxygen support and, in severe cases, mechanical ventilation. ECMO has been used in selected cases. Cardiopulmonary support is the substitute for an antiviral — keeping the patient stable while the immune system clears the infection.

What HantaScan reports

Death counts in the case index reflect what WHO or CDC has explicitly reported for each record. We do not impute deaths from confirmed case totals, and we do not present individual case-fatality rates as personal risk estimates.

What HantaScan does not claim

We do not say a specific person will or will not survive, will or will not develop HPS, or has or has not been infected. Those decisions belong to clinicians, with laboratory support, working from a complete medical picture.
